Barnsley once historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, its current location places it near Sheffield, Manchester, Doncaster, Wakefield, and Leeds. Additionally, the larger towns of Rotherham and Huddersfield are in the surrounding area. Before it was given to the Pontefract Priory in the 1150s, the town was part of the parish of Silkstone and saw very little growth. Millhouse Green From an administrative point of view, the village is a civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and Penistone. As such the village is in the Penistone West Ward of the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. The village lies on the edge of The Peak District National Park. It is surrounded by rolling pastures and high moors, and the river Don flows nearby. Even though it is a small village, it is lucky to have a village store, a primary school, and The Blacksmiths Arms, its local pub. This place only serves snacks, but it has real ales and the feel of a village pub. Oh! And it sells Bradfield Breweries “Belgian Blue” well worth a visit for those that enjoy real ale. Redbrook is a neighbourhood in Barnsley. The postcode is within the Darton West ward/electoral division, which is located within the Barnsley Central constituency. Barnsley was first mentioned in the Domesday Book (This is the Old English spelling for "Doomsday Book" - the oldest Government record that is held in the National Archives), and the town's historic roots are evident in its castles and heritage centres, which detail the South Yorkshire city's place in history. Surrounded by ancient villages and historic parkland, Barnsley has developed into a bustling shopping and social centre with a variety of independent shops, a museum housed in the iconic town hall, and, of course, the renowned markets.

Wombwell is a town within the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough, in South Yorkshire. A small portion of the town's data for the 2011 Census fell into the wards of Darfield and Stairfoot, as well as the Wombwell ward.

Darton is a sizable community in the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough in South Yorkshire, England, not far from the county line with West Yorkshire. Darton has a station on Northern's Hallam Line, which connects Sheffield and Leeds via rail. Darton is located about 5 miles (8 km) north of Barnsley, 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Mapplewell, and on the banks of the river Dearne, directly to the east of Kexbrough.

The town of Penistone is located in the Pennines and holds the distinction of being the highest market town in the entire country. The Peak District National Park begins approximately 4 kilometres to the southwest of the town, and the highest point, Hartcliffe Tower, is 1,194 feet (364 metres) above sea level. From this vantage point, visitors can see the Woodhead Bypass as well as the Dark Peak.

Dodworth is a South Yorkshire village located within the metropolitan borough of Barnsley. Historically, a township in the West Riding of Yorkshire's ancient parish of Silkstone. In 1866, it became a separate civil parish and, in 1894, an urban district. The urban district and civil parish were dissolved in 1974 when Dodworth was transferred to the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in the newly created county of South Yorkshire.

Denby Dale is a village and civil parish in the West Yorkshire metropolitan borough of Kirklees. It is 9 miles northwest of Barnsley and 10 miles southeast of Huddersfield. The village is steeped in history and was first recorded in the history books as Denby Dyke, where the turnpike road crossed the river Dearne. Holmfirth is located at the confluence of the rivers Holme and Ribble, in the heart of the breathtaking Holme Valley, and is a popular destination for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. Last of the Summer Wine was filmed in Holmfirth, which is a renowned location. It's incredibly active, with a plethora of amazing events and sights to see, and it even has its own vineyard! It is chock-full of incredible independent businesses and is well worth a visit! It is also home to Longley Farm, famous for its Jersey cream, creamy yoghurts and cottage cheese, and Compo's,for those who enjoy traditional fish and chips. Located in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Stocksbridge is both a town and a civil parish. It is located to the east of the Peak District and was formerly a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Below the Underbank Reservoir, in the narrow valley of the Little Don River, lies the town. It blends in with the surrounding areas of the civil parish, including Deepcar, Bolsterstone, and the eastern end of Ewden Valley near Ewden village. Silkstone is a South Yorkshire village and civil parish within the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley. It is located at the Pennines base, between Barnsley and Penistone. The parish includes Silkstone Common as a community. Cawthorne, West Bretton, Barnsley, Dodworth, Stainborough, Thurgoland, and Hoylandswaine were formerly part of Silkstone Parish.

Royston in Barnsley is a bustling town with a population of 11,354 people. Its shopping area, comprising of The Wells and Midland Road, serves the local community with a variety of retail options. The town's housing tenure is diverse, with a majority of properties being owned either outright or with a mortgage. In terms of amenities, Royston offers a range of leisure facilities, including the Royston Leisure Centre, which has a fitness suite, swimming pool, and sports hall. The Civic Hall, also known as the Albert Shepherd Centre, is a popular venue for events and gatherings, with space for up to 250 guests.
